PS5: 11 Second-Party Studios Sony MIGHT Buy
2. Quantic Dream
This ambitious French studio had been on an (initially) one-studio mission to create a new genre of a video game; somewhere between an old-school point-and-click adventure and an interactive movie.
Their first two titles (Omnikrom, Indigo Prophecy) had minor cult followings yet they really broke into the mainstream with their exclusive collaborations with Sony; Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and, last year's Detroit: Become Human.
Why Likely:
Before Sony put some serious financing and marketing power into Quantic Dream, the studio was seen as an out-of-touch experiment. Yet, the big push the publisher gave to Heavy Rain was beneficial to both, earning the fledgeling PS3 a must-play title, whilst putting Quantic on the map.
The two have worked intricately hand-in-hand together for near a decade since. Sony has supported them through their media hardships, risk-taking and divisive end products. Quantic has kept their games exclusive, with little sign of releasing them elsewhere
Why Not:
Until very recently that is. In a baffling move this year, Quantic announced Chinese company NetEase has invested a minority share in the studio. The dev also elaborated that their future projects will cease to be exclusives from now on.
For the first time ever, those three PS titles are releasing on different hardware via the PC and Epic Game Store. Unless Sony is willing to buy NetEase out, a first-party deal won't be happening.
