PS5, Xbox Scarlett & Nintendo Switch: 9 Things We Need To See
5. PlayStation - Backwards Compatibility
If PlayStation has any Achilles heel in its content, it's the lack of standard backwards compatibility. Sure, there's the streaming service PlayStation Now, but not only is it annoyingly unreliable due to its insistence on a strong internet connection but also doesn't allow players to permanently purchase any of the content.
It goes without saying that Sony needs to remedy this case going into the next generation. Having their fans worry whether or not they'll have access to the games they've bought over the PS4's lifecycle could wind up being a big issue for the blue-brand going forward, especially as the Xbox has found great success offering the feature and will likely make a big deal of it going forward.
Whilst Sony is no stranger to bluntly ignoring fan-requested features (When can we change our terrible PSN names Sony!), this may be one change too big to ignore. There's a high chance that this is the final console generation ever, and if players can't access the wealth of PlayStation content they've accumulated over their years supporting Sony, they may be very angry with the company going forward.
Besides, making old games work on new consoles is surely a way to move more titles and craft an even more desirable product. What's the downside?
