17. Doom 3 BFG Edition (2012)

Doom 3 was a big deal when it dropped back in 2004. However, it did split fans in the middle, with some feeling like it was too Survival Horror focused, and not enough break-neck action.

With the Doom franchise currently at the best it's ever been, we can look back to this one with more objective eyeballs.

The BFG edition brings a clean remastered sheen to the divisive game, and it looks damn good on last-gen systems. Also, thankfully, they add the vital mechanic of allowing gamers the ability to hold a flashlight and a gun at the same time, which also makes it the best version to play.

It's a slick and creepy rollercoaster experience, with the devs attempting to pull the carpet from underneath the player so relentlessly, you'll be too terrified to let your guard down even once. However, by the end of the game, the unpredictable becomes predictable, and you can start to see the thrills coming (e.g grab that Health pack beneath grate = surprise demons jumping out of the woodwork).

Add to that some serious pacing issues (the game lasts for three hours longer than necessary) and also that it lacks that vital element that made the originals great: the element of fun.

Still, it holds up as a shining example of a Survival Horror game - perhaps more than a Doom game.
