5. Dishonored (2012)
Arkane Studios joined the Bethesda family with this groundbreaking stealth game.
Set in an alternative world resembling a twisted Industrial Age England, the plot is a tale of political intrigue, as your falsely disgraced military man needs to enact revenge target by target. It isn’t overly original but the colorful cast of supporting characters keeps things intriguing, the lore is rich, and there are enough twists to keep you involved to the finish line.
The main character fails to resonate though, played in the tired first-person mute mode (an approach that long has long lost its novelty in games). Also, moral choices are fairly black-and-white, not letting us build upon his blank slate persona - although it's fun to see how good or bad choices begin to seep into the levels.
The true stand-out here though is the exhilarating gameplay, a stunning shake-up to stealth games with a bevvy of exciting tools at your fingertips.
It's a genre that's known for being meticulous and daunting. Here, levels feel like vast playgrounds where anything is possible. Will you fast teleport across rooftops? Slow time and enter through the front? Or possess a rat and move via the sewage tunnels?
It's a wildly imaginative and bountiful experience, standing as the purest (and best) out the series, not to mention, a landmark evolution of the genre.
