2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

Releasing way back in 2011, Skyrim wasn't so much a game, more like a phenomenon, and has since released on every platform known to man (even the Alexa... seriously).

Certainly, The Elder Scrolls had already begun to break out of the niche PC market with Morrowind, and more so with Oblivion on last-gen machines... yet none of them even touched upon the epic foothold the fifth installment has held on the gaming market.

Why? It was hardly breaking new ground for Bethesda, with it sticking to the tried-and-true formula of creating one massive fantasy sandbox that players could run loose in, filled with cool stuff to do, explore, and battle.

Perhaps it's because its the most refined and polished spin on their formula. With a stunning Norse-inspired world filled with incredible creatures, sidequests, and a wealth of varied environments...you'll literally want to walk across every inch of the map to see what's lying in store for you.

Don't fancy the main campaign? Why not go off and become Harry Potter at the Magic Academy? Or join a band of warrior werewolves and become their leader? Heck, you can even just go earn your living as a quaint fisherman.

Luckily though, unlike many of the former installments, the campaign is a cracker too. Sure, you're charged with saving the world once again... but there's enough solid plot swerves to keep you gripped throughout, with a handful of epic and unforgettable moments.

Whatever your feelings are on this game, it has left Elder Scrolls VI with a high bar to hit.
