Ranking Every Classic Sonic The Hedgehog Level From Worst To Best

7. Death Egg Zone (Sonic & Knuckles)

Sonic Ranking 3

The ability of a hedgehog to breathe in space is a hugely understudied area of the natural sciences, with the vast majority of our findings hailing chiefly from the Sonic series. Sonic & Knuckle's Death Egg Zone is Newton's apple in this field, though ironically gravity has little role to play in the stage.

It's clear that Robotnik's been paid a visit by the Grand Designs team since his space-station's last appearance, as it's now about a billion times bigger and has all manner of new features, almost certainly including a pointless rumpus room, a gallery landing, and a walk-in closet. Sonic isn't given the full tour, but he is privy to a huge metal chamber with a big bouncy... thing... which acts as a very bizarre lock, as well as some really exciting light transporters curiously designed with a hedgehog in mind. Honestly, I can't figure out what need Robotnik has for half of this stuff. Budget bigger than his brain...

It's a stunning stage though - super-challenging yet fast-paced, and with an inventive but intuitive gravity flip mechanic which would become a staple of the series. Death Egg's a hard one to crack, but great fun to beat.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
