Ranking Every Classic Sonic The Hedgehog Level From Worst To Best

5. Flying Battery Zone

Sonic Ranking 3
SEGA

'Flying Battery' brings to mind an improvised projectile in a schoolyard ruckus more than a floating battalion, but that's the name Robotnik chose when he smashed the champagne on his souped-up aerial fortress.

Whereas the second game allowed Sonic to scale the airship's exterior, Flying Battery is all about internal infiltration. Animal capsules line the hold, and it's revealed Robotnik uses them as all-purpose Mason jars not just for the ensnared residents of Mobius, but also badniks and, for some reason, rings. One of them is even sentient, -and predictably evil, serving as one of the game's most inventive mini-boss. The laser contraption from Wing Fortress even makes a return, though lessons have not been learned.

Add in a high-tempo electronic tune to this fast and furious level, and you have one that is fantastic from start to finish.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
