Ranking Every Devil May Cry From Worst To Best

5. DmC: Devil May Cry

Following four instalments, Capcom sought to reboot the franchise in a pretty drastic way, announcing in 2010 that they'd be handing the IP off to Ninja Theory, having been impressed by PS3 title, Heavenly Sword.

The transition was full of promise... until we saw Dante, and this brown-haired, shoe-gazing moper was once again - like DMC 2 - not what any series' fans wanted.

Playing today, disconnected from all the hype and expectation - and knowing that this didn't actually kill the franchise, thanks to DMC 5's return - DmC: Devil May Cry is surprisingly brilliant as a "indie film"-style one-off.

The only bad DMC is 2, and Ninja Theory should've always been commended for remixing the core fiction in some effective ways that have only aged better over time. Stripping Dante of his memories so he's a useless layabout at the beginning; making Vergil a freedom fighting hacker group leader going up against the Fox News-style Raptor, lead by demon of the underworld, Mundus? This was all excellent stuff, it was just wrong place, wrong time, when all fans wanted was more of DMC 3.

Still, try DmC: Devil May Cry today. You'll find one of the best action games ever put to code, and even Dante's overall attitude isn't anywhere near as dour as we once thought.
