Naughty Dog released four Crash Bandicoot games on the Playstation before being bought out by Sony. As Universal owned the rights to the Crash character, this forced the studio to develop a new franchise in the form of Jak And Daxter on the new Playstation 2 system, though Crash would live on through the playable Crash Bash before plunging into obscurity after starring in a handful of progressively worse games made by a variety of developers. Jak and Daxter was a highly enjoyable game in the early days of the Playstation 2's lifespan, but it wasn't a 'must have' game like the entries in the Crash series were, largely due to the fact that traditional platformers were becoming largely obsolete as technical advances began to allow for an influx of more diverse action/adventure titles, such as the Ratchet And Clank series developed by Naughty Dog's 'sister studio' Insomniac (also responsible for the original Spyro The Dragon trilogy). Colourful it may have been, but ultimately Jak And Daxter could be completed in just a matter of hours and it became stale even more quickly, given that the mute player character was mostly tasked with doing the same things repeatedly.
