First developed for GTA IV, then used for GTA V - only to be gutted and rejigged for the latter's HD overhaul in 2014 - Rockstar's RAGE engine (Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) is proof of just how talented the design team's staffers are. Unlike Bethesda - who can't seem to reuse a game engine two times in a row without more and more features falling apart - Rockstar have only taken their homegrown tech from strength to strength.

Though you'll have to debate out in the comments who's who in the above pic, we can at least see that the visual aspects and general feel of the old west are being prioritised. Where the first Red Dead Redemption certainly had some jaw-dropping moments when you first crossed Mexico or had a gunfight while bathed in moonlight, there's an oft-serene quality to western cinema that we're yet to see replicated in gaming.

Not for long.
