Rockstar do a lot with a little when it comes to John, initially subverting expectations by having him be a deadbeat father abandoning his son, only to slowly build him up into the faux-"hero" we know and love.

A notable plot pivot towards the close of the game cements his actions as downright badass, but there's a throughline of character building and future-referencing when it comes to John, that makes him a joy to hang out with.
