It would be very easy to write Reverend Swanson as a degenerate one dimensional drunk priest who abuses his position to get away with all manner of things.

Thankfully, Rockstar introduce Swanson as a notably frenetic drunk, only to ground him with a past life of sorrows and demons that need drowning. By game's end he's gone through quite the series of events in the background - all of which are worth talking about.
