Red Dead Redemption 2 Reviews: 9 Early Reactions You Need To Know

6. Camps Are A Big (Optional) Part Of Progression

In terms of new game mechanics, much has been made of the game's progression involving a moving "camp" that shifts location at key points in the story.

Home to the entire Van Der Linde gang, here's where you return in between missions, converse with other characters and upgrade Arthur's wider set of abilities. Thankfully, Rockstar have learned from San Andreas needing you to "check in" and eat food every few in-game days, but the camp will also unlock meaningful things like boats and maps.

Thankfully, this doesn't override the entire game, and you're free to pursue the main story for the majority.

Still, you can customise your camp with various objects found out in the world, including high-profile animal kills and even rugs made from their pelts. Hunting, gathering and crafting is also possible at camps, but again, Rockstar have been wise to not make it Red Dead 2's major draw.
