If you'd have asked me last week if a lecture on California citrus and horticulture would come in handy in discerning when the next Red Dead would be taking place, I would've laughed. Like, not just a chortle or anything. I mean a huge belly laugh. Tears would have erupted.

Not to say that it isn't interesting, but it's not really the sort of thing you'd expect to come in handy in figuring out when the sequel to one of your favourite franchises of all time would be set. But here we are, seeing that Red Dead 2 could only be set from the 1880s onwards, granted we place faith in Rockstar's attempts at historical accuracy.

You see, back in the Old West, fruit was never really a part of a staple diet. Instead, it was reserved for special occasions - as a present for birthdays and Christmases - rather than a thing you ate five times a day. It was only when California began to export citrus on a mass scale that that fruit came to form a natural aspect of the american diet, and the boom never really gained traction until the late 1870s. So you see, if this quaint little general store can have fresh fruit, stocked to the brim with what looks to be apples and oranges, then there's little chance the title could be set any earlier. Granted it could still be a possibility, but at least we've narrowed down the timeframe a little more.

Combine that with the vastness of the oil fields we've seen so far, and again, it looks as though the title is going for a late 19th century setting at the very least. Boom. History.
