Main character of the first Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar's work fleshing out John's past is brilliant.

We find out that not only was he involved in any number of crimes alongside the gang, but that he actively ran out on Abigail and young Jack Marston, only to be rescued when it happened again, by Arthur Morgan.

Following this, John mostly stays in the background, only intersecting with Arthur as the pair plan a life away from Dutch. Everything culminates in a mountainside duel at Ambarino where John makes a break for it as Arthur takes on Dutch, Micah and scores of law enforcement.
