Red Dead Redemption: Every Villain Ranked From Worst To Best
13. Colonel Agustin Allende
A huge portion of the first Red Dead game sees John Marston make a flurry of friends and enemies south of the border in Mexico. One of these enemies is the Mexican army commander, Colonel Agustin Allende.
Initially arriving on the scene as an ally to help John catch Javier Escuella, Col. Allende's betrayal of John is televised by his morose and obscene behaviour and treatment of his lieutenants. Colonel Allende recruits John to join his army fight the rebels (led by Abraham Reyes) in exchange for giving up Javier and Bill Williamson.
Once the tables are turned and John is betrayed, there isn't much of a tonal shift in the character of Agustin Allende. While his underling, Captain Vincente de Santa has more of a character evolution after the betrayal, and it's a shame because Colonel Allende could have had more depth written into his character. Allende's obsession for power does spill out in his words as he spouts his corruption, taste for murder and sexual assault of the vulnerable women he rules over; but it's all surface level. Had Red Dead Redemption spent a smidgen of time to explain how he rose to power and commanded such a vast army, his status as a formidable threat would have felt weighted.
If there is ever going to be a Red Dead Redemption 3, here's hoping Rockstar finally add some flesh to their dictating overlords. They can't miss the target three times, surely?
