Resident Evil 8: 10 Things It MUST Learn From RE2 Remake

Even though it's early doors and Resident Evil 2 is essentially the first major release of 2019, some have already dared to utter the name of Capcom's stunning remake and "game of the year" in the same breath, and for good reason. Taking a step back from the main series, this revival has shown everyone just how great the classic Resident Evil formula is, and how Capcom might have made a mistake with binning it so quickly.

Of course, the new version of the second game isn't just a reskin, and while the core structure and beats are more or less the same, the developers have gone to great lengths to make the whole experience feel fresh, modern and original. Updating the over-the-shoulder style of Resi 4 into a system that's far more versatile and weighty, adopting a more "realistic" graphical style and restructuring old scares and puzzles to surprise franchise veterans, the remake is the perfect blend of old and new.

Consequently, with it being so well received, Capcom are in a bit of a pickle when it comes to their next step. Resident Evil 7 pushed the franchise into a bold new direction, and while it wasn't perfect, it did continue to innovate what the franchise "is". Whether they strive ahead with that vision or revert to the style of 2, the next proper sequel can learn plenty from this latest release.
