Resident Evil HD: 10 Essential Lessons Capcom Must Relearn

6. Be Innovative

What's so great about the 2002 Resident Evil is that it wasn't content with just being a remake of the original. It contained new creatures, new areas and new gameplay mechanics that help craft a fresh experience out of an old one. All these new additions made it evident that the designers tried hard to scare and delight fans all over again. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about newer entries in the series. Every game since Resident Evil 4 has copied its style, which has started to show its age. This isn't the first time Capcom has churned out games with little innovation between them; such a problem was what made Resi 4 feel so fresh at the time of its release. The franchise is now in another such slump, and with nearly two decades worth of games behind it, it's beginning to grow stale. If Resident Evil is to be engaging and scary again, Capcom needs to find new and creative ways scare players. This doesn't mean simply introducing new monsters, but entirely new design mechanics that change the gameplay dynamics without altering the fundamentals. That's exactly what the best entries in the series did.
