Sea Of Thieves Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
No Man's Sea.
Almost three years after it was first announced, Rare's new co-op multiplayer pirate adventure Sea of Thieves is finally in players' hands...and somewhat predictably, it's neither the audacious home-run its fans were hoping for, not the utter trainwreck more cynical observers were perhaps expecting.
It is a game effectively tailor-made to receive mixed reviews from critics and general gamers alike: a half-ambitious, half-lazy effort that doesn't really do enough, but at the same time can provide some supremely fun experiences under the right conditions.
A Game of the Year contender it certainly isn't, then, but Sea of Thieves may serve players well enough who can forgive its myriad flaws, while those who understandably expected more will want to give it a wide berth.
It's not the first-party home-run that Microsoft desperately needs right now, but at least Rare has offered up something halfway intriguing and different, even if it comes with a number of hefty caveats...
