Skyrim: 16 Awesome Easter Eggs And References You Totally Missed

15. The Minecraft Mt. Everest Pickaxe

Starting out with one of the most talked about secrets in the game; not because of its very nature as a tucked-away collectible, but more because it relates to an eery real life story. You see, the 'Notch' pickaxe that's left sticking out the top of the Throat of the World mountain is a direct reference to two things: Firstly the creator of Minecraft Marcus 'Notch' Persson, who already many will remember pushing the iconic Minecraft pickaxe into pop culture as a staple tool in the series. Secondly though, many think the Notched Pickaxe is in reference to climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine who went missing when scaling Mt. Everest back in 1924. Although Irvine's body was eventually recovered in 1999, Mallory remains missing somewhere up in the hills - with the only remnant of their combined efforts being a pickaxe stuck in the side of the mountain. Very spooky indeed.
