Forth To Fifth (1987-1995)
This one was undoubtedly a huge step, it saw games venture into the brave new world of 3D gaming. The new hardware allowed gamers to display a respectable amount of polygons of the screen, which meant new 3D worlds to explore. This generation really got its start in 1995 with the launches of Sega's Saturn and a new kid on the gaming scene, Sony's Playstation. Both of these consoles used disc-based games, a brand new development which meant cheaper manufacturing costs. Nintendo came along a year later with their Nintendo 64, opting for the cartridge system which allowed for much quicker load times. The games of this generation were a world away from what had come before, with developers exploring what could be done with 3D. The controllers went through a drastic makeover to keep up with this change in gameplay; we saw analogue sticks, ergonomic design, the introduction of rumble feedback and a whole load more buttons.
