With Patapon, Japan Studio's pitch was to create a game that had never existed before...judging from the final result, it's safe to say they most definitely did just that.

Taking control of an unseen deity worshipped by primal eyeball creatures. The gamer must cheer them on into battle with rival tribes, in a wildly distinct mix of real-time strategy combat with a rhythm game twist. The result is an experience charming, addictive, and plenty bizarre.

It makes for an interesting companion game with beloved exclusive LocoRcoc: both were early standout titles for the PSP, held singular art styles, and off-kilter humor. Plus, both were weird as all hell.

It was another blatant sign of the direction that Japan Studio was leaning into. Their output was less blockbuster-focused, and more indie experiments, that came, for the most, came with a nice helping of winning charm.
