Japan Studio's biggest solo success of recent times (outside of its co-development efforts) was in the form of an unexpected tech demo for the PSVR headset.

Their in-house team, Team Asoboi, created The Playroom VR: a handful of mini-games designed to showcase VR, all featuring a cute gang of robots. One of the sections, played like Mario 64 mixed with Ape Escape, as protagonist Astro Bot searched for his hiding friends in an interactive 3D environment.

It was a nice, quaint concept...but could it work for a full campaign?

Demand for a full-fledged game was too high to ignore and Asoboi created Rescue Mission, a colorful, inventive, endlessly fun VR game that took the traditional 3D platformer and placed the gamer splash in the middle of it.

It cemented the genre as a milestone of the VR format, but it also easily stands as one of the best 3D platformers ever made, period. Japan Studio had finally found their modern mascot and blockbuster IP.
