Spider-Man PS4: 10 Ways It Owes Its Success To The PS2 Spider-Man 2 Game
9. The Introduction Of Random Crimes
What defines Spider-Man more than his commitment to New York and its people? The trope that seems to conclude every one of his cinematic adventures is Spidey's inability to ignore a cry for help or whirring police siren. Most games, before and after this, get too focused on giving players the big comic book moments rather than delivering on that authentic Spider-Man experience.
Spider-Man 2 let players do everything from stop muggings in progress, to taking down thugs in exo-suits, to saving a child's wayward balloon. On paper that last one sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? But what's more Spider-Man than using your wall crawling powers to put a smile back on a little kid's face?
While the PS4 iteration lacked random events that wholesome, it did develop depth into the mechanic, adding more encounters as you progressed through the story and more variety to the activity. Stopping crime is a superhero's bread and butter, so it should not be a surprise to see it as a superhero game's core loop.
