Star Wars Battlefront: 11 Reasons It's A Big Disappointment
6. On-Rails AT-ATs
One aspect of Battlefront that became abundantly clear during the beta even if you hadn't been paying attention to news beforehand is that AT-ATs would unfortunately be on rails throughout the game. That's right, you can pick up a card to "pilot" them, but your control is effectively limited to turning the monstrosity's head and firing ammunition at the enemy...a major step back from previous Battlefront games, where you had full control. Yes, it's still tremendously satisfying to melt 20 of the other team with a few well-placed missiles, but the fact that you can't take the AT-ATs off-road and wreak havoc at will seems a little, well, lazy. DICE themselves have admitted that it was 100% a design decision, but in honesty, it just sounds like they're saying "we carved out these very specific paths for the AT-ATs to walk on because we were too lazy to program a map that would function with total AT-AT freedom". There's no doubt that having full control of the beasts would result in a lot of chaos, glitching and AT-ATs trapped in a spot from which they could never exit, but wouldn't it be absurdly entertaining to be able to see how messy things could get? Instead, picking up the AT-AT power-up pretty much just gives you a really, really powerful gun with insane range and the protection of firing away inside a giant robot.
