Star Wars Battlefront 2 Beta: 4 Ups & 7 Downs

5. It's Both Too Simple & Needlessly Complex

It might sound contradictory, but on the basis of this beta, Battlefront 2 is shaping up to be a game both disappointingly simplistic and over-complicated all at the same time.

For instance, there's a depressing lack of spawn options, objectives are dull and repetitive, and teamplay can't even begin to match the brilliance of DICE's Battlefield series. It just feels too restrictive and scaled-back.

In other areas the game meanwhile inundates players with an overabundance of convoluted systems, such as Star Cards, classes, items and special abilities, to the point that it seems to be mistaking quantity for complexity and depth. It makes it harder to just jump in and play, especially if you didn't play the first game.

In attempting to create a casual shooter for the masses, EA and DICE have instead sculpted a schizophrenic product that might be too cumbersome for the most base player but also not nuanced enough for more seasoned genre vets.
