Star Wars Battlefront 2 Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

4. Progression Is An Insulting Mess

Battlefront 2's progression system is by far the game's worst and most controversial aspect, as the multiplayer suite is effectively built around a loot box system intended to convince players to part with real-life cash for a better chance at getting that sweet, sweet loot.

While at present EA has actually switched off microtransactions (though will surely be turning them back on in revised form in the near-future), the multiplayer infrastructure is still defined by a hyper-convoluted loop of acquiring credits at a sluggish rate through gameplay, using them to open loot boxes, and hoping you unlock a performance-enhancing Star Card that's actually worth a damn.

There are too many types of in-game currency, it seems to be made intentionally confusing for players both new and old, and overall it can't shake a predatory stink that wants to get players in the mindset of handing over their credit card details, even if at present EA has unplugged the potential pay-to-win aspect after panicking at the furious online response.

Considering how stingy the game is with doling out credits, the progression system just isn't fun at all, and makes the multiplayer feel rather hollow and soulless at times.
