Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Review - 5 Ups & 3 Downs

3. There's A Frustrating Lack Of Polish

EA

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a stunning looking game. DICE developed a knack for realising the look and feel of a galaxy far, far away with their two Battlefront titles, and while Fallen Order doesn't look quite as good, it's still just as lovingly created. The main character models all look the part, while the presentation on the whole is immaculate, whether you're scaling the arid cliffs of Dathomir or the lush jungles of Kashyyyk.

It's elsewhere, though, where the mask starts to slip.

Bearing in mind that I ran Fallen Order on a base model Playstation 4, my time with the game was littered with performance issues. Texture pop-ins were frequent, assets loaded into cutscenes in full-view (lessening the emotional pay-off of a pivotal story moment), and glitches in combat became frequent as the game approached its middle stages. Characters would refuse to fall off ledges and plummet to an early grave, while some would glitch into the floor, preventing progression when enemies had to be cleared in order to advance to the next stage.

Sadly, for all that the main character models looked the part, certain NPCs near-enough looked like they belonged on last-gen systems. The level of polish just wasn't there, and it's incredibly disappointing, especially given we're now at the end of the console cycle.

It's unlikely EA would've countenanced the thought of releasing Fallen Order after the holidays and after Rise of Skywalker, but a few more months to iron out the kinks would've definitely resulted in a better-looking product.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
