Streets Of Rage 4 Review: 4 Ups & 3 Downs

5. It's Based On A 90's Beat-Em-Up To A Fault

Streets of Rage 4 is a faithful sequel in an already solid franchise. Having said that, it's difficult to recommend it to younger gamers or people who are unfamiliar with the series.

Make no mistake; this sequel succeeds at scratching that nostalgic itch gamers of the 1990s had. But if this game was completely unconnected to Streets of Rage, it wouldn't have the same effect.

Side-scrolling beat-em-ups were all the rage decades ago. Tragically, it's a dying genre. Modern gamers may not see the novelty of Streets of Rage 4 despite how slick and fun it is.

Another problem with emulating an older game is the length. Back in the day, gamers were perfectly satisfied playing a game from start to finish in one sitting. Since you can win SOR4 in less than two hours, that may not be enough for consumers forking out £30.

There are other modes like Boss Rush or the No Continues Playthrough but it's just the same game with mild adjustments. Even if you love the franchise, you'll complete everything the game has to offer far sooner than you hoped.
