Super Mario 64: 10 Facts Every Nintendo Fan Needs To Know
5. The Sequel
Super Mario 64 was such a monumental success, fans were unsurprisingly clamouring for more.
Although sequels for 3D Mario games are uncommon, Shigeru Miyamoto was eager for a followup since he believed the game only showed off 60% of the console's capabilities.
Because Super Mario 64 2 would've been built on the same engine as the original, Miyamoto expected a fast development, allowing the sequel to come out at the beginning of 1998. This game would have included Luigi as a main character, a ridable Yoshi, and a four-player option.
Yet, here we are over 20 years later, and Super Mario 64 2 is still nowhere to be seen. So, what happened?
Well, this game was intended to be released for the CD-based add-on for the Nintendo 64; the 64DD. After the commercial failure of this appliance in Japan, the proposed Mario sequel was canned early in development. Only one level was made but it has never been publicly revealed.
It's assumed that several components for Super Mario 64 2 were salvaged for other sequels such as Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy.
