3. The Rumours Just Wouldn't Stop

Thanks to the the Internet, video game hoaxes nowadays can be shut down with ease. But during the 1990s that wasn't the case, meaning unfounded falsehoods lingered until they became legendary.

Super Mario 64 was no different.

Although there were rumours that you could play as Wario or you could access a secret Hammer Bros. suit, the one that gamers obsessed about the most was whether or not Luigi was in the game. This theory exploded when players noticed the star statue in the castle courtyard had text seemingly read, "L Is Real 2401". It was assumed the "L" stood for "Luigi" and the number "2,401" was a clue to unlock him.

Just when you though the rumours were put to bed, a model and voice clip of Mario's cowardly sibling were discovered in the game in 2020.

Turns out, there were going to be three different options to play with both Mario brothers; a mini-game, a co-op, and a mode where the pair started at opposite sides of the castle and had to reach a certain destination.

Oh, what could have been.
