New Donk City already has a couple of other mentions on this list, but not for what is arguably the most obvious reason; its namesake, Donkey Kong.

There’s a large selection of street names and signs on buildings referencing specific characters from the Donkey Kong Franchise and classic style artwork on billboards. Whilst not exclusive to New Donk City, there’s even an unlockable Diddy Kong outfit for Mario himself.

Peach can step aside for the time being, as the original Mario girl is back. In Donkey Kong, you had to rescue Pauline from the titular ape.

Since being saved all those years ago, she’s gone on to become the Mayor of New Donk City and a pretty fantastic singer too, as one level in Odyssey sees you traversing the New Donk skyline in fantastic 2-D platforming segment with a full-on Donkey King level included. Pauline will even refer to Mario as Jump Man, the original name for the character.
