Unforgivably included as DLC, Leviathan explores the origin of the Reapers, the sentinent machines youve spent the entire trilogy at war with. Its a memorable journey, from the investigation of Brysons lab to the encounter with the Leviathans themselves in Shepards (only) sojourn underwater. Bioware also stepped up their combat game somewhat in comparision with the main quest, but its the plot exposition and atmosphere that really make this mission stand out.
3. Ilos (ME1)
The music, lighting, graphics and storyline combine to give the impression of truly exploring an alien culture in a way that the Mass Effect trilogy has struggled to replicate ever since. You wont soon forget the experience of hunting Saren through the unnervingly calm Prothean ruins, or taking cover behind vegetation and statues in a frantic shootout with the Geth. The contrast between the tranquillity of the ruins and the furiousness of the gunfight is brilliant, and the final mad dash in the burning, stuttering Mako tank, through the Mass Relay before it closes, is worthy of a blockbuster action movie.
2. Collector Base: Suicide Mission (ME2)
Its not number one! The final mission of Mass Effect 2, from start to finish, is a triumph. Kicking off with a thrilling cinematic you see your ship, the Normandy, zip through the Omega 4 Mass Relay and attack the collector base. Depending on your choices throughout the game, one or two of your crewmates might brutally and suddenly die in this initial assault. Either way, most or all of your crew land unharmed and its time to get on with the main mission. A series of difficult choices follow. Which tech expert should unlock the vaults? Which biotic should be trusted with the force field? Your crew will live and die by your decisions, and none of them are immune. The gameplay is fast and furious, the boss fight is epic and your final decision, in retrospect, foreshadowed which of the series central themes they would choose to focus on for the trilogys conclusion. Its just a shame that your decision has so little impact in the next game how much better it would have been to choose Cerebus (and Control) or the Alliance (and Destroy) at Mass Effect 2s climax, and play through Mass Effect 3 working for one organisation or the other with either Miranda and Jacob or Ashley/Kaidan and James against you. Ah, if only...
