During the events of the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Night Mother of the Dark Brotherhood is an Imperial assassin by the name of Severa Magia. The player is employed by the Morag Tong and tasked with honourably assassinating her. Even before this, in The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, The Night Mother was seen as a Redguard woman, with a daughter named Corda. Yet another Night Mother is recorded as being a little old human lady with fluffy white hair, who worked among the Thieves Guild in order to gain popularity for The Dark Brotherhood.

The final Night Mother to live was a Dunmer woman who had five children, sired by the Dread Father. One night, claiming to hear the voice of Sithis in her head, she followed his instructions to sacrifice her five children to Sithis, murdering each of her offspring and sending their souls to the void. This enraged the local citizens of the town of Bravil, who killed her and burnt her house down, burying her and her five children in a tomb below the statue of The Lucky Old Lady. The statue is surrounded by happy, dancing children - a stark contrast to the terrors buried below it.

During the Dragonborn's adventures through The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, they may have come across a book called "The Night Mother's Truth", which details the origins of the Dark Brotherhood, and the dark history of the ethereal Night Mother. Thirty years after her murder, a man reported hearing a strange, comforting voice inside his head, claiming to be the voice of The Night Mother. She named this man the first "Listener."
