All members of the Dark Brotherhood must adhere to their Five Tenets - strict rules that must never be broken, lest the offender incur the wrath of Sithis. Never dishonour the Night Mother, never betray the Dark Brotherhood or its secrets, never disobey a superior, never steal from and never kill a Dark brother or Dark sister. They say these rules were created by Sithis himself, and was the creed that every member of the guild followed diligently.

During the events of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The Hero of Kvatch will meet The Night Mother after progressing up the ranks of The Dark Brotherhood, completing contracts and silently assassinating targets as per the Speaker's instructions. When The Hero comes face to face with the ethereal spirit of The Night Mother, in the hidden crypt beneath the Lucky Old Lady in Bravil, they are forced to thwart an assassination attempt on her. Mathieu Bellamont reveals himself to be a traitor, who has been killing members of The Brotherhood, and he swiftly kills two of the other Speakers before turning on The Night Mother. After dealing with the threat, The Hero becomes the newest Listener, and goes on to accept contracts from The Night Mother, passing them on to the single remaining Speaker, Arquen.
