The Last Of Us Part 1 Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs
1. The Price Is Too Steep For Returning Fans
The big question is, are all these updates worth the high cost Sony is asking for? If you’ve never played this game before, absolutely yes. Like I said in the introduction, this is the definitive Last of Us experience, and the new improvements allow it to outclass new releases when it comes to both gameplay and visuals. For those who have already played this game to death though, the decision becomes more complicated.
Ultimately, it’s going to depend on what you wanted out of a Last of Us remake. If you wanted a radically different experience or a major re-tooling, you’re not gonna get that. If you’re wanting the best-looking bar-setter on the PS5, you’re not gonna get that either.
Likewise, I can’t overlook the lack of Factions game mode here. I get why Sony would cut this as, we know Naughty Dog is working on a standalone multiplayer game based on that mode, but it’s tough to hide the fact that its omission means there’s less content in this compared to TLOU Remastered.
There’s undoubtedly been so much care and effort poured into this project, but it is, at heart, still The Last of Us. Naughty Dog might have been better off waiting another 5 years, but judged on its own quality, this is a very good version of one of the best games of all time. It’s just a shame that Sony’s RRP means it’ll be mostly discussed in terms of its full price value, rather than the quality on display.
