The Last Of Us Part 2: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best
3. Dina
Ellie's girlfriend and companion for the first few sections of the game, Dina is the necessary counterweight to the game's often oppressive sadness. She reminds Ellie of her humanity through her joyous demeanour and quick wit, and represents hope for the future through her love for Ellie and her pregnancy. Dina's the first sign of overwhelming joy in the game, with the snowball fight in Jackson immediately lightening the tone before darkness sets in.
The way we witness Dina and Ellie's feelings slowly take over during the Jackson sequences is one of the best romances in video game history, and the side content in Seattle further establish them as a perfect couple. They have such chemistry and traversing the landscapes with her limits the fear and grief you experience as a player. Losing her for long stretches of the narrative is disappointing but makes sense, and helps make Ellie's increased violence feel more realistic as she no longer has Dina to stablise her.
Dina is so crucial for the ending containing the narrative weight it does, the threat of her dying by Abby's hands is viscerally distressing and the relief of her survival is insurmountable. Her love for Ellie is so wholesome and eventually devastating when she's forced to recognise her girlfriend's incapability of letting go. Still, even with the sadness that the climax brings, nothing can take away the joy of dancing with her in the kitchen of their home.
