The Medium REVIEW: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
3. Old-School Survival Horror Cinematography
Let it be known: This is still an awesome way to "do" a horror game.
Having your camera angles hang back, your character somewhat lost in the frame amongst elements to interact with or avoid - it's entirely routed in how Resident Evil and Silent Hill handled themselves, but therein lies the charm.
Bloober have made many games in their time, but after a trio of first-person titles it's awesome to see them bring this idea of "isometric survival horror" back to the mainstream.
I grew up with this style of horror, but regardless of personal taste, there is a huge benefit to filling a frame with gruesome detail, background animations or imposing creatures suddenly in the foreground.
It's a wholly more considered way to guide the player through a series of environments, and one I hope we see a true modernisation of going forward.
