The Order: 1886 - 15 Easter Eggs, References & In Jokes You Must See
11. Charles Darwin The whole appeal of the alternate timeline framework is that it offers an opportunity to "explain" historical moments in a different way. As the official teaser website confirmed before release, Charles Darwin's work plays a big part in establishing the science of the period and corroborating the existence of half breeds without depending solely on supernatural elements. Darwin's work looking into the Theory of Evolution implicitly offers the half-breeds as another step in the process, having discovered it on an expedition to New Guinea, as the letter above (which first appeared on the website, and is then included in game as a collectible) suggests:
Dear Lord Hastings, I write to you in this moment of triumph in order to inform you of a discovery during my expedition, of half breed specimens we have unearthed at the remains of a settlement in New Guinea. The particulars of these findings I shall hope to share with you as soon as I am able as they will add greatly to what we currently to know about them. Again I must thank you for your generosity in allowing me the use of the United India Company facilities during my trip, they proved most . Yours most sincerely, Charles DarwinIn reality, Darwin didn't go to New Guinea: it was in fact his great rival Alfred Russel Wallace - the other evolutionary theorist, whose work was attached to Darwin's without his permission - who visited the area in search of his own proof.
