The Witcher 3 Hearts Of Stone DLC: 5 New Details You Need To Know About

4. Runewords Will Dramatically Change Gameplay

For all The Witcher 3's many strengths, the combat system always felt a little lacking. Yes, there was an assortment of spells and potions to play around with, but - particularly in the sword-fighting - it always felt too superficial for a game that was so deep and impressive in every other way. To some extent at least, that is set to change, thanks to a mysterious new power/mechanic/other entity called Runewords. We know little about them so far, except that they will involve combining glyphs that will improve Geralt's abilities in various ways. So there'll be runewords that improve Geralt's various resistances, and also endow his weapons with as-yet unseen magic effects. You will be able to research runewords through a new NPC called the Ofirian wizard. So the details are vague at best, but anything that encourages more experimentation and strategising will be very welcome. It's great to see an expansion going back and building on flawed areas of the game rather than just packing in a load more content, but really we expected nothing less from a classy developer like CD Projekt RED.
