4. Proper Usable Magic

The Witcher 4
CD Projekt RED

From golem-filled underground laboratories to shape-shifting witches, the Witcher world is filled with magic – but most of the time, you’re on the receiving end. Despite the multitude of wizards and sorceresses you get to meet, fight and shag, most of the magic remains reserved for cutscenes and the occasional fireball flying your way.

All the player has access to are the five witcher Signs – a rudimentary form of magic, easy to use and combine with swordplay. And despite separate skill branches being devoted to magic use in the second and third game, that’s what they remain: a supplement, used for occasional crowd control and as situational counter to specific monsters. You have to jump through quite a few hoops before your Signs can deal meaningful damage, and it has to be to the exclusion of almost everything else.

But there’s nothing in either the books or the games saying that a witcher, given enough magic ability, can learn to hurl proper fireballs and call down bolts of lightning.

In fact, the books mention that Geralt has the potential to become a full fledged wizard, so there’s really no reason not to allow players to explore this avenue in a new Witcher game, introducing spell books full of powerful sorceries.
