What 10 Great Video Games Look Like Without Visual Effects
6. Death Stranding
The best thing about the behind-the-scenes mo-cap sessions for Death Stranding is knowing that all of the actors really were together on set performing this script together.
Considering the calibre of the talent acquired, you might have assumed that performances were captured in isolation or with stand-ins, and then pieced together in post-production. These videos make it clear that, for the most part, Kojima's cast were all together, which is ultimately what made the eventual game's cinematics so believable.
Again, what's immediately striking is how much of Kojima's distinctive cinematography was solidified in the real-life shoot. He maximises the use of space, swooping the camera in and out to emphasise intimate moments or to create tension, and all of those movements are worked out on a real set.
Also, watching Norman Reedus perform all of the odd, fourth-wall breaking gestures in the safe room, as well as riding a cardboard bike operated by a bunch of dudes, is hilarious.
