What Halo: Infinite Can Learn From Gears 5
The new grappling hook could also be an indication of how Chief might reach trickier or more out of reach places perfect for hidden easter eggs and collectables. With the tech upgrades that players accumulated for Jack in Gears 5 hidden around the world of Sera, it is possible that other suit bonuses will be hidden across the map. Who knows, we could see the return of the legendary skulls.
From zipping around with the grappling hook to being able to pick up and throw power coils, it seems Chief has seen some substantial upgrades already. During the demo, the player picks up a deployable shield that briefly replaces the hook, this might mean he had unlocked a new ability by finding it or that we will see the return of one-time-use drops.
Much like what was added to power up Jack, Infinite features an 'Upgrades' tab in the menus. Judging from the currency rewards from completing objectives in Halo, we could be looking at a similar system to how components worked towards levelling up abilities.
Lately, games have been leaning more towards implementing RPG elements to prolong the game's playtime with series such as God of War and Assassin's Creed now featuring tiered loot and countless crafting materials. Gears 5, however, eased the player into it in a way that felt organic. Updating Jack's tech was incredibly simple and encouraged players to explore more of the map and side activities without feeling overwhelming.
Hopefully, 343 will follow this example of a more simplistic approach to the RPG formula. Other titles such as PlayStation's Ghost of Tsushima have begun to adopt the simplified version of improving a character's capabilities.
