A lot of developers these days are wary of releasing a new IP, when they can just release the next game in their franchise. Often, a new IP doesn't always go down well, which obviously leads to a loss for the publisher. Instead, we are stuck in an endless loop of franchised games that just continue to release until the eventual heat death of the universe.

With these predatory practices, the industry is no longer becoming a sustainable model. With the developers being forced to crunch to meet the deadlines, and publishers trying to squeeze every last penny out of the consumer, if nothing changes, the industry is going to collapse.
