According to a leaked e-mail grabbed hold of by The Nerd Mag, current WWE Raw Women's Champion Ronda Rousey is apparently set to appear in the latest release of a classic video game franchise.

Rousey, who made her big WWE debut in digitised form in the most recent edition of the 2K series, is rumoured to be portraying Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat 11 - actually the 22nd entry in the long-running gorefest.

The e-mail reveals that Rousey will attend an upcoming 'MK Day' scheduled to celebrate the launch, and will also participate in a live stream stage show. Mortal Kombat 11's unveiling is currently set for 17 January, with the game slated to hit shelves on 23 April for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Sonya Blade has been part of the once-over controversial beat 'em up since the very first Mortal Kombat, way back in 1992. The character was originally inspired by five-time martial arts World Champion Cynthia Rothrock, so it seems eminently fitting she should be portrayed by a similarly accomplished athlete in the latest outing.

Blade's original digitised sprite was provided by aerobic instructor Elizabeth Malecki - ironically, one of the only members of the original cast with no background in combat sports.

He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
