Xbox 720: 10 Rumours We Hope Are True

3. Blu-ray Support

I€™ve heard a few things online regarding the Xbox 720 and its media disc support. Some reports indicate that the 720 will do away with the disc tray completely however this isn€™t at all likely in my opinion. Microsoft are clearly looking to produce an all-inclusive media system; with the supposed DVR capability and Cloud Media emphasis. Why then would they suddenly remove the disc drive from their next console? Streaming is popular sure, but have we really done with discs already?! Of course not. Think about it; with the new generation comes bigger games, not just in terms of size and scale but in terms of sheer data. 360 games are already struggling to fit onto one disk now as it is, with many larger games spilling over onto disk 2 or 3 (case in point: Max Payne 3) and can you imagine having to download each game for the 720 before you could play it? No, that doesn€™t add up. We need a format that can hold GB€™s of data before it€™s full in order to support the size requirements of the new software; oh wait, Blu-ray totally does that! It makes complete sense that the 720 will house a Blu-ray player; we€™re not at a stage yet where streaming content is the preferred method. Until the internet is even faster and everyone is on board, if Microsoft are looking to create this all-encompassing entertainment station, they need to include Blu-ray, simple as. But according to most sources, this is practically a no-brainer.
