A rumour that's been doing the rounds from multiple different insider sources - but specifically picked up and corroborated by Windows Central - has suggested that Microsoft is planning on kicking the next generation off with two Xbox models come the end of 2020.

While the Xbox Series X has already been revealed, the 'Lockhart' machine, as it's known, will apparently be akin to the current Xbox One S, a cheaper alternative that will replace the Xbox One X. Though it will still be a next-gen system, it of course won't have every feature boasted by its flagship sister console.

It's a smart move for Microsoft to offer more choice for fans come the launch of the next generation, especially when all signs points towards the machines from both this company and Sony carrying a much higher RRP than the PS4 Pro or even the Xbox One X.

Undercutting the competition when it comes to cost has always been a major tactic of the "console wars", but that might now come in the form of alternative models to not sacrifice the power of the flagship effort.

Rumours suggest all of this will be officially unveiled at a Microsoft event in May, with the spotlight also being on Halo: Infinite and the as-of-yet unannounced Fable leading the exclusive pack.

Though that date might change due to everything happening in the world, the evidence pointing towards Lockhart's existence does appear to be overwhelming.
