But of course, the biggest question fans are asking is when we can play it. Utilising the existing BOTW engine allows for a much quicker development time as the core assets are already in place, so we may end up seeing it sooner than expected.

Notorious leaker Sabi (Who correctly leaked many E3 2019 announcements) suggested in November that Nintendo had previously planned to release this in 2020 but later clarified this is now delayed until 2021, advising that Nintendo's big 2020 title now revolves around "tires" (Mario Kart 9 incoming?). This shouldn’t surprise dedicated Zelda fans as the series has historically faced delays, with more recent entries like Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword falling victim to this. Breath of the Wild was no exception, originally planned for release in 2015 before they suffered issues with the physics engine.

Shigeru Miyamoto commented on this back in 2016, advising that "Every time we make a Zelda, we want to make something new. It's hard to gauge how long that's going to take. And it's also hard to gauge at what point whatever we consider to be new is done".

So whilst the leak of a planned 2020 release date may have been accurate at the time, it’s highly likely that this will change.

Regardless, BOTW 2 appears set revolutionise the series formula even further and as we await more news, it’s clear Zelda fans have a lot to look forward to.
