2. How To Make Elixirs (What 'Critters' Are Exactly)

Within the first few hours of the game you'll be making skewers and fancy meat dishes like some Hyrulean Gordon Ramsay. However, elixirs are slightly more elusive, as the game repeatedly states you need to create them by cooking monster parts with 'critters'.

For the longest time I thought this was 'any other monster', but it's not - instead, Breath of the Wild critters are butterflies, frogs and other small creatures you'll find in the various forests of the land.

You can purchase these from vendors inside Stables too, but at no point does the game actively call them 'critters'. Still, you'll notice in their descriptions that they buff specific umbrella topics of stats like attack, defence, stealth etc. so pair a critter with your monster part of choosing and see what you can create.
