10 Horror Movie Characters Who Deserve Their Own Spin-Off
5. Anna Valerious - Van Helsing
Releasing among the late 90s/early 2000s wave of action monster movies that included the likes of The Mummy and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Van Helsing perhaps isn't the most fondly remembered film in the world. However, it certainly did have its charm if you could ignore its many flaws.
Of course, Hugh Jackman, at the height of his initial run as Wolverine, was a huge draw, as was Kate Beckinsale just one year removed from Underworld. The latter portrayed Anna Valerious, a Transylvanian with a history of trying to kill Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh), before crossing paths with Jackman's Van Helsing.
Unfortunately, just one outing from Anna Valerious simply wasn't enough, and though she ultimately died and ascended to Heaven by the end of the film (as had been her aim for centuries), a prequel spin-off could fix that problem straight away.
Her immortality, her complex family history, the fact that her brother is a Wolf Man, and of course the feud with Count Dracula spanning across decades and centuries could all add up to a delicious tale of death and revenge, set in a dark and broody Transylvania. While CGI could be used to de-age the character over two decades later, it feels as though an animated project could be a fun way to go, much in the same vein as Van Helsing: The London Assignment from later in 2004.
